A Major Win for Octopuses

A really positive step forward for animal welfare.

The NSPCA was proud to join more than 130 animal welfare organisations and scientists from around the world in calling for an end to plans for the world’s first commercial octopus farm in Spain.

Following years of campaigning led by Compassion in World Farming and partners, those plans have now been abandoned.

Octopuses are highly intelligent, sentient animals with complex behavioural needs that simply cannot be met in intensive farming systems. This decision recognises that some species should remain in the wild, rather than being exploited through industrial farming.

It’s a powerful reminder that when organisations, scientists and supporters work together, meaningful change is possible.

Congratulations to everyone who helped make this happen.
