Spike came into the NSPCA through our inspectors with his two siblings. On arriving to the shelter, they were extremely nervous and shut down. In their short lives they have not experienced much and have not been exposed or solicalised with outside life. They had never been on a lead before and did not want to leave their kennel. A few weeks on, although still a little timid their playful puppy side has began to show. He is loving his walks and play times here at the shelter and is meeting more and more people everyday. As they were living in a rural area, a quiet house and area will be needed. His family must be willing to give him the time and patience needed to build his confidence in the outside world. He will benefit from training to help him settle into a new environment. At just 1 years of age, it is not uncommon for dogs that may not have experienced puppyhood to revert to this stage especially as their confidence grows. Spike will be best suited to a home with teenagers or adults and an owner experienced with his breed. He could possibly live with another dog pending a dog meet.
Collies are one of the most intelligent breeds. They are so smart and need an owner who understands this and can cater to their needs. It’s extremely important for collies to be both mentally and physically exercised each day as these dogs are used to working long hours on farms so brain games will help them burn any extra, energy. They absolutely love to learn and can learn quickly. They are very loyal and make great companions. They look up to their owners and will always aim to please. They do wonderful at agility! Adult training classes will help dogs settle into family life. Continuous training is also very important for dogs and their owners.
