As Ireland’s national animal welfare charity, we are committed to ensuring that every donation is used as effectively as possible to protect animals, prevent cruelty and create lasting change for animal welfare across Ireland.
Every euro donated helps us rescue animals from neglect and abuse, provide lifesaving veterinary treatment, investigate welfare concerns, support rehabilitation and rehoming programmes, and advocate for stronger protections for animals nationwide.

Funding FAQ
Is the NSPCA Government funded?
The NSPCA receives some Government funding, but we are not fully Government funded.
Each year, eligible animal welfare charities can apply for funding through the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine’s Animal Welfare Grants Programme. This funding makes an important contribution towards our work, but it does not cover the full cost of running the NSPCA and delivering our animal welfare services.
How much Government funding does the NSPCA receive?
Under the 2025 Animal Welfare Grants Programme, the National SPCA was awarded €2,606,825 by the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine.
The amount awarded can vary from year to year and is determined through the Department’s annual grant process.
How does the Animal Welfare Grant process work?
The Animal Welfare Grants Programme is administered by the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine and is open to eligible registered animal welfare charities.
The application process requires organisations to demonstrate that they meet the eligibility requirements and provide information about their animal welfare activities and how grant funding would be used. The funding is intended to support operational activities involved in delivering animal care, animal welfare services and public education.
Who determines the level of funding awarded?
The Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine administers the Animal Welfare Grants Programme and determines the funding awarded to eligible organisations through the annual grant process.
The NSPCA applies for funding but we do not determine the amount it receives. Awards vary between organisations and from year to year.
Where does the remainder of our income come from?
The NSPCA relies on the generosity of the public and our supporters to help fund our work.
Alongside Government funding, our income comes from sources including individual donations, regular giving, fundraising, gifts in Wills and legacies, corporate partnerships, philanthropy and community fundraising.
This support allows us to continue caring for animals, respond to welfare concerns and invest in services and programmes that improve animal welfare across Ireland. The help from individual/community fundraising, philanthropy and corporate partnerships all contribute to our work.
What does the Government grant support?
Animal Welfare Grant funding helps registered animal welfare charities deliver their day-to-day work. This includes caring for animals, providing vital welfare services, and supporting education and awareness initiatives that promote responsible pet ownership and improve animal welfare.
For the NSPCA, Government funding contributes towards delivering our animal welfare work, but it does not fund everything we do.
Why does the NSPCA still need donations and fundraising?
Government funding covers only part of the cost of our work. Donations and fundraising are essential to keeping our services running and allowing us to help animals when they need us.
Public support helps fund rescue and Inspectorate work, veterinary treatment, food and daily care, rehabilitation and rehoming, education and prevention programmes, and wider animal welfare work.
It also helps us respond to unexpected and complex cases where animals may require significant veterinary treatment or months of rehabilitation before they are ready to find a new home.
Where does my donation go?
Every donation helps the NSPCA protect animals, prevent cruelty and give animals in need a second chance.
Currently, 74 cent of every €1 goes directly towards helping animals, supporting areas including rescue, veterinary care, rehabilitation, rehoming, education and animal welfare work across Ireland. The remaining 26 cent supports fundraising and essential support services, helping ensure we can continue our work now and into the future.
In 2025, the NSPCA’s expenditure directed towards helping animals was broken down as 40% rehabilitation and rehoming, 22% veterinary care, 9% Inspectorate and rescue, 2% education and volunteering and 1% advocacy.
