Animal Rehabilitation

Rebuilding Lives

Rescue is only the beginning of an animal’s journey.

Many of the animals who arrive into NSPCA care have experienced neglect, abandonment, cruelty or trauma. While some require veterinary treatment, many also need time, patience and support to rebuild their confidence and learn to trust again.

Our rehabilitation programmes focus on both physical and emotional recovery, helping animals overcome the challenges of their past and prepare for life beyond NSPCA care. Because every animal is different, rehabilitation plans are tailored to meet their individual needs.

Individualised Care

No two animals are the same.

Some animals arrive frightened and withdrawn, while others may require behavioural support, socialisation or training to help them adjust to life in a home environment. Our animal care teams work closely with veterinary professionals, volunteers and foster carers to provide the care and support each animal needs to progress at their own pace.

Through enrichment activities, positive reinforcement training and daily interaction, we help animals build confidence, develop trust and learn new skills.

Foster Care & Second Chances

For many animals, a foster home plays an important role in their rehabilitation.

Foster carers provide a calm and supportive environment where animals can continue their recovery outside of a shelter setting. This can be particularly beneficial for young animals, those recovering from illness or injury and animals who need extra time to build confidence.

Working alongside NSPCA staff and volunteers, foster carers help prepare animals for the next stage of their journey.

Rehabilitation in Action

Successful rehabilitation is measured by more than recovery alone. It is about helping animals develop the confidence, skills and wellbeing they need to thrive.

In 2025, NSPCA teams helped find homes for:

1,323 Dogs
1,194 Cats
56 Equines
360 Small animals

Every successful adoption represents the combined efforts of our animal care teams, veterinary professionals, foster carers, volunteers and rehoming teams.
