Our Inspectorate
NSPCA Inspectors are on the frontline of animal welfare in Ireland, responding to reports of cruelty, neglect, abandonment and animals in distress.
The NSPCA is unique among animal welfare charities in Ireland in having authorised inspectors operating under the Animal Health and Welfare Act 2013. This enables our teams to investigate welfare concerns, intervene when animals are at risk and take action where necessary to protect animal welfare.

Investigating Animal Welfare Concerns
When concerns are reported, inspectors assess the situation and determine the most appropriate course of action.
Many cases can be resolved through education, advice and support, helping owners improve the care provided to their animals. Where welfare concerns persist or animals are suffering, inspectors may issue Animal Health and Welfare Notices, remove animals from harm or prepare cases for prosecution.
Inspectors work closely with local authorities, An Garda Síochána, veterinary professionals and the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine to help protect animals and uphold animal welfare legislation.
Prosecutions
Prosecution is always a last resort. However, in serious cases of cruelty, neglect or non-compliance with animal welfare legislation, inspectors may gather evidence and prepare case files for legal proceedings.
Through investigation, enforcement and prosecution, our Inspectorate plays a vital role in protecting animals and improving animal welfare standards across Ireland.
