Our veterinary teams specialise in shelter medicine – a unique area of veterinary medicine focused on treating vulnerable animals, supporting animal welfare and managing the health of animals in a shelter environment.
From emergency treatment and surgery to preventative healthcare and ongoing medical support, every animal receives the care they need to heal and recover.
Working alongside animal care teams, volunteers and foster carers, our veterinary professionals help animals regain their health and wellbeing, providing the foundation for their continued recovery.
A Unique Approach to Animal Welfare
The NSPCA is unique among animal welfare charities in Ireland in operating its own veterinary hospital.
This allows animals entering our care to receive immediate assessment, treatment and ongoing medical support from dedicated shelter medicine professionals.
Our Veterinary Hospital
Based at NSPCA Dublin, our veterinary hospital provides emergency treatment, critical care, routine procedures and lifesaving surgeries for animals in our care.
In 2025, our veterinary teams delivered more than 10,500 consultations, performed over 2,200 surgeries and carried out 1,493 spay and neuter procedures through our animal welfare programmes.
The hospital also provides ongoing veterinary support to hundreds of animals in foster care and supports the operation of the mobile veterinary clinic, helping pet owners who may otherwise struggle to access essential veterinary services.
At NSPCA Longford, Wicklow and Cork, animals receive veterinary care through visiting veterinary professionals and trusted local veterinary practices, ensuring they receive the medical support they need throughout their time in NSPCA care.
The NSPCA Dublin veterinary team also works closely with UCD Veterinary School, providing students with valuable hands-on experience in shelter medicine and exposure to a diverse range of domestic and wild animals
Mobile Veterinary Clinic
The NSPCA Mobile Veterinary Clinic helps make essential veterinary care more accessible to pet owners facing financial or practical barriers to accessing veterinary services.
Operating in communities across Dublin, the clinic provides affordable preventative veterinary services, helping pets stay healthy and reducing the risk of animals entering welfare situations in the future.
Through the Mobile Veterinary Clinic, our veterinary teams provide services including vaccinations, microchipping, parasite treatment and routine health checks, supporting responsible pet ownership and animal welfare at a community level.
